The 4 biggest increases

2011: +15%

From AUD 235 to AUD 270 on 1 July 2011, the first big step.

2013: +50% in 8 months

Two increases back to back: AUD 280 to AUD 365 on 1 January 2013, then AUD 420 on 1 September 2013.

2023: +25%

From AUD 510 to AUD 635 on 1 July 2023, with annual indexation plus an extra increase in the federal budget.

2026: +25% and +49%

The first visa goes from AUD 670 to AUD 840. Second and third visas go to AUD 1,000: for the first time, staying on costs more than coming.

What it means for your budget

The third visa has existed since July 2019. Back then, doing all three years cost AUD 1,455 in visa charges (3 × AUD 485).

In 2026, the same path costs AUD 2,840, almost double. And that's before other costs: medical checks if requested, proof of funds and insurance.

Practical tips

Charges almost always change on 1 July: if you're ready, apply before that date.

You pay the charge in force on the day you lodge your application, not on the day it's decided.

Budget for the second visa from your first year: at AUD 1,000, it adds up.

Visa charges aren't refunded if your application is refused.
