Who is behind 88mates for employers

  • 88mates for employers was founded by Simon Marion, a former self-employed farmer who knows first-hand how hard it is to find reliable seasonal workers.
  • It is the employer side of 88mates, the free app for Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417 and 462) backpackers in Australia, available in 7 languages on iOS and Android.

Why we built it

  • Farms and regional businesses often need staff at short notice, while backpackers nearby are looking for work, many of them for the 88 days that count towards a second visa.
  • General job boards aren't built around the Working Holiday Visa. 88mates puts your job in front of backpackers already near your business.

How it works

  • You post a job in about two minutes, with no account. Your ABN fills in your business details.
  • The job appears in the 88mates app feed of backpackers within the radius you choose.
  • Backpackers contact you directly by email or phone. You hire and employ them yourself: we are not a labour hire company or a recruitment agency.

How access to 88Workers profiles is checked

  • 88Workers profiles are created by backpackers themselves in the app, when they choose to be found by employers. They can switch their profile off at any time.
  • To browse the profiles, an employer enters an ABN, which must be active in the Australian Business Register, and a work email that can receive mail. Temporary email addresses are refused.
  • Each employer is recorded once per ABN, so access can be reviewed and removed if the details are wrong or can't be verified.

Pay what you want

  • Posting jobs and browsing profiles is free.
  • If 88mates helped you hire, you can make a voluntary contribution of the amount you choose, by card through Stripe, in Australian dollars.
  • It is never required to use the service.
